A Troubling Friday Night Lights Plot Twist

With just two weeks to go until Friday Night Lights returns, the critics are lining up to chime in on what many believe is a hidden TV treasure.

Earlier this week, we heard from ESPN's Bill Simmons, the sharp-tongued, often cynical columnist who loves his sports, and who is urging more and more viewers to keep the "Lights" on for this year and beyond.

Now, Akron Beacon-Journal critic Rich Heldenfels has shed some light on the Season 2 premiere. He does not give away a crucial plot point of the first episode, but he does describe how this important story development may harm the future of Friday Night Lights, in his opinion.

His column appears below. We'll keep the details to a minimum before the jump, but beware: herein lie some spoilers, at least in the broad sense.

Is Friday Night Lights still capable of greatness in its second-season premiere? Yes. Is there anything to worry about? Also yes.

So much that was good about the show is still very good. The Taylor family, for starters, which now has a new baby to deal with, as well as Eric's being far away, at his new college coaching job at TMU.

Julie and Matt Kiss

When Tami Taylor (Connie Britton) goes in labor, Eric has to fly home. And what he finds is that the baby is just one of the challenges facing him; daughter Julie (Aimee Teegarden) has gone all snotty in his absence, for several reasons.

The Julie-Matt relationship has taken an interesting turn, as have the lives of Buddy and Lyla Garrity, Tim Riggins, Landry and Tyra, and Jason Street.

In fact, the show is so stuffed that Street's new dilemma is presented very quickly, and we hardly see Smash Williams (Gaius Charles) at all.

Friday Night Lights Spoiler: Lyla's Reconciliation

With the return of Friday Night Lights less than three weeks away, various fan sites and news sources alike have been quick to post spoilers and speculation about what fans can expect to see in the sophomore season.

One interesting rumor involves the troubled Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly) and her possible reconciliation with one of the other principal characters on the show - as well as her renewed interest in her Christian faith.

However, a lot remains up in the air. There's the spoiler we reported earlier (she could be doing a lot more than reconciling, we hear), and fans hoping for Lyla to get back together with Jason (Scott Porter) may end up disappointed.

Tim and Lyla Reconciling?

There are, however, reports that Lyla Garrity and Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) will repair their fractured friendship with the help of the church.

Friday Night Lights Spoilers: Season Two Synopsis

There isn't much here that we don't already know, just an official synopsis from NBC regarding the Season Two premiere of Friday Night Lights.

Called "Seasons of Change," the episode begins with the summer coming to an end and the defending state champion Dillon Panthers looking to continue their gridiron success despite a great deal of change in the air.

Connie Britton

Most notably, Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) has begun his career as the head coach at Texas Methodist University and is faced with mounting adversity and hardship not only on the field, but in being separated from his family.

Accentuating this theme is the fact that Tami Taylor (Connie Britton, pictured) is on the verge of going into labor with their second child.

Meanwhile, Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki) receives a visit from someone in her past that will alter her life - an event hinted at in the network's first official Season Two promo.

Best friends Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) and Landry Clarke (Jesse Plemons) both confront new lifestyles that neither seem ready for.

All this and plenty more will unfold just three weeks from tomorrow. We are counting the days until the return of Friday Night Lights.

Friday Night Lights Spoiler Watch: A Road Trip South of the Border

Michael Ausiello of TV Guide has a little info on an upcoming episode of Friday Night Lights, although he also dispels a rumor circulating about that very same episode. It's nothing major, so we'll run it without a jump to the next page.

Still, if you're opposed to Friday Night Lights spoilers, quit reading this...

Jason Street and Lyla Garrity

Above: Jason Street and Lyla Garrity.

Here's what Ausiello writes about Friday Night Lights:

I've got conflicting stories, that's what I've got. My Texas mole tells me that Tim, Jason and Lyla take a road trip to Mexico early in the season, and, while they're south of the border, one of them fantasizes about a possible (gulp) threesome.

A source at NBC, however, is quick to refute that rumor, insisting that the only thing that's accurate about this mole's report is the trio's trip to Mexico. Sigh. It's probably good for the show's creative credibility that the rumor is false, though it'd certainly help with Friday Night Lights' ratings problem.

Friday Night Lights Spoilers: New Faces

A new season of Friday Night Lights is right around the corner and the buzz is slowly, but surely, starting to build. Kristin Veitch of E! Online is one of the best known sources of TV spoilers, and she's got some interesting scoop on some new faces we can expect in Dillon, Texas, this year.

Major Friday Night Lights Spoiler Alert

This is more than your typical Friday Night Lights spoiler fare, it's a dead giveaway. With that in mind, you'll have to follow the jump to read it.

A reader asks TV Guide whether Coach Eric Taylor - who signed a deal to coach Texas Methodist University - is really going to be away from Dillon all season.

Kyle Chandler as Eric Taylor

We know he'll be front and center on Friday Night Lights even when he's in Austin, but is Kyle Chandler mulling a return to his Dillon post?

Friday Night Lights Gets a New Coach

Chris MulkeyWith Eric Taylor setting off for Austin, the Dillon Panthers needed a new coach.

They now have one in veteran actor Chris Mulkey, who has joined the cast of NBC's second-year series, a rep for the network confirms.

Mulkey will have a recurring role as the new coach of the Dillon football team, who takes over after Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) moves on to the college ranks at Texas Methodist University.

Kyle Chandler will still be front and center on the show, however.

The new coach, who arrives from outside the West Texas town of Dillon, is a no-nonsense taskmaster with a my-way-or-the-highway attitude.

His revamping of the team's game plan will cause friction with some of the players, as well as former quarterback and new assistant coach Jason Street (Scott Porter), who finds himself getting caught in the middle.

Mulkey is the third new face to join Friday Night Lights for the coming season.

Glenn Morshower (24) and Daniella Alonso (One Tree Hill) will also have new, recurring parts as, respectively, the police officer dad of Landry Clarke (Jesse Plemons) and a nurse who helps Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) care for his grandmother (Louanne Stephens).

Mulkey co-starred in AMC's multiple Emmy nominee Broken Trail last year and also counts a recurring role on Twin Peaks and FOX's acclaimed, but short-lived comedy, Bakersfield PD, among his credits.

He's also appeared in the films North Country, Sugar Town and Behind Enemy Lines and made guest appearances on such shows as CSI, Lost and Boomtown.
